End of 2010

The end of the year was pretty busy, but a lot of fun. Christmas was a bit weird, considering its summer here and my family is thousands of miles away, but it was quite entertaining getting to see it through the eyes of kids again. They had lots of visits with Santa (and let me tell you, Christmas is a great time for discipline...all you have to do is mention Santa's name and kids will do whatever you want!) and many holiday parties and events.

I had a chance to take the family with me to Hillsong's Christmas play and family day. The kiddies loved the play and had a blast at the carnival outside.

On Christmas Eve we packed the pajama-clad kids in the car and drove around to see all the lights on the houses. Kudos to the Aussies for their spirit...they go all out with their Christmas lights! Several houses even had Santa outside handing out candy (which caused a bit of confusion in our car since he kept magically popping up at different houses...we finally had to explain that sometimes people like to dress up as Santa for fun, but assured them the one they visited at the shops was, in fact, the real deal).

We spent Christmas day at a nice restaurant on a cliff overlooking the ocean, which I sadly have no pictures of since I forgot my camera. Trust me when I say it was beautiful. We stuffed ourselves full of seafood and then spent the rest of the day lazing around in the sun.

For New Year's I gathered my wits and headed into the city for the famous harbor fireworks. Talk about mass chaos. I somehow managed to nudge my way into Circular Quay just before they closed it off and squeezed myself into a spot next to a rather irritating, complaining American family and several drunken, though pleasant, Irish twenty-somethings. I was in between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, which sounds ideal but actually provides a more limited view of all the fireworks. I had a great view of the bridge, but the fireworks on the other side of the harbor were harder to see. Still, I was glad I went considering I may never have that opportunity again.
Here's a video of the countdown and the beginning of the fireworks:
